British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday firmly stated that the United Kingdom will not be drawn into the ongoing Iran war, despite mounting international pressure and remarks from Donald Trump regarding NATO. In a national address, Starmer emphasized that all decisions would be guided by Britain’s national interest, asserting that the conflict is not the UK’s war. He reiterated his stance during a press briefing, saying he would not change his position regardless of external pressure or political “noise,” even as tensions between global allies continue to escalate.

The conflict, now entering its second month, has already begun to show signs of economic strain, particularly due to disruptions in global energy supply chains. Starmer warned that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran could significantly impact the UK economy, potentially driving up the cost of living. However, he assured citizens that the government is prepared to manage the fallout. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for global oil shipments, and its closure has heightened concerns about long-term energy security and international trade stability.

In response to the crisis, the UK will host a high-level international summit aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring maritime security. Starmer announced that representatives from 35 countries have already signed a joint statement committing to collaborative efforts. The conference will be led by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, with military planners also working on post-conflict security strategies. Starmer stressed the need for a “united front of military strength and diplomatic activity” to ensure stability in the region and safeguard vital global shipping routes.

Meanwhile, Starmer addressed concerns about shifting alliances following Trump’s remarks suggesting the United States might withdraw from NATO and reduce its support for allies, including the UK. He made it clear that Britain would not choose between the US and Europe, highlighting the importance of maintaining strong relationships with both. He added that deeper cooperation with European nations in areas such as defense, energy, and the economy would ultimately strengthen ties with Washington as well, underscoring a balanced and strategic approach to foreign policy during a time of global uncertainty.
