Islamabad, July 18 Pakistan has welcomed the designation of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief on the sanctions list of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

The UNSC's IS and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee added TTP chief Noor Wali Mehsud, to its sanctions list on Thursday, subjecting him to assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Pakistan welcomes the designation of Noor Wali Mehsud, the leader of TTP by the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee on its IS and Al Qaeda Sanctions List," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The statement said the sanctions are being implemented by Pakistan in compliance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and Pakistan hopes that other countries will also follow suit.

According to the UN, Mehsud was named the TTP leader in June 2018 following the death of former chief Maulana Fazlullah.

The group was designated on July 29, 2011 for its association with the Al Qaeda.

Under Mehsud's leadership, the TTP has claimed responsibility for numerous deadly terrorist attacks across Pakistan, including an attack targeting security forces in North Waziristan in July 2019 and a bomb attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa last August, the UN added.
