A major suicide attack took place in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province in the Bannu district. Three security personnel were killed in the incident, including an officer of Lieutenant Colonel rank. In addition, a civilian also lost his life, and several other soldiers were injured. According to reports, a total of five soldiers, including Colonel Gul Faraz, were killed and four others were wounded. This was the third attack in the past 15 days and the second suicide bombing in the last five days. The attack occurred in the Srar Dargah area of Bannu.
A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden rickshaw into a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle belonging to the security forces. The MRAP vehicle is specially designed to withstand such attacks, but the explosion was extremely powerful, causing significant damage to the vehicle. At the time of the attack, the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Shehzada Gul, was participating in an intelligence-based operation. The blast occurred just as he was stepping out of the vehicle, resulting in his death.
Earlier, drones were reportedly sighted in Afghanistan’s Khost province. Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. So far, five terrorists have been killed, and the operation is still ongoing. No organization has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, suspicion has fallen on the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has previously targeted security forces in the region.
There has been a rise in terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan. Earlier this week, the TTP rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a checkpoint in Bajaur district, killing 12 people, including 11 security personnel. In recent months, the TTP has intensified its attacks in Pakistan. The group aims to overthrow the government and impose its hardline Islamic ideology. The Pakistani government has accused the TTP of using Afghan soil for carrying out attacks and training, though Afghanistan has consistently denied these allegations.
