Two tiny planes collided in midair at the Marana Regional Airport in the US state of Arizona, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to officials.

According to initial data released by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II collided February 19 morning upwind of runway 12.

The Marana Police Department said that both aircraft were smaller fixed-wing single-engine aircraft.

The Lancair "impacted terrain near runway 3 and a post-impact fire ensued, said NTSB, while the Cessna "landed uneventfully."

There was no information given about the victims.

The fatal crash occurred only weeks after a helicopter crashed with an American Airlines passenger airliner in Washington, DC, killing three crew members and all 64 passengers.

All six passengers and at least one person on the ground were killed when a small medical transport plane crashed into multiple buildings in the US city of Philadelphia that same week.

Many plane crashes are being reported in the US. The US aviation sector on February 19 called the Congress for emergency funding for air traffic control technology and staffing.
