New York [US], January 24 : While the bitter cold will be felt this weekend, it's the heavy, widespread snowfall that is expected to dominate headlines across New York and New Jersey, CBS News reports.

A winter storm watch has been issued, along with a cold weather advisory in effect for part of the weekend.

The storm system will begin in the Southern Plains on Friday, then move across the South and into the East Coast, bringing plummeting temperatures, heavy snow, ice, and dangerously cold conditions.

Saturday through Monday have been designated as First Alert Weather Days due to the anticipated impact. New Yorkers could see 6 to 12 inches of snow from Sunday into Monday.

According to CBS News, the heaviest snowfall is expected in New York City and its northern suburbs, while areas south and east of the city may see a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Snow will begin lightly on Sunday morning, intensifying through lunchtime, and by the afternoon and evening, heavy, steady snow will lead to widespread accumulation. By Monday morning, lingering flurries and light snow are expected.

Friday will be frigid and windy, with temperatures feeling like 0° to 15°. The cold weather advisory runs from 10 p.m. Friday through 10 p.m. Saturday, with wind chills making it feel as cold as -5° to -25°, CBS News reported.
