Woman detected with rare pregnancy condition, after baby found inside liver

A baby was found inside a woman's liver according to Canadian pediatrician Dr Michael Narvey. Surgeons managed to save the life of the woman but the foetus was not viable and the sac had already ruptured. Canadian pediatrician Dr Michael Narvey made a TikTok about the astonishing discovery. Posting on his @nicu_musings account he says: "I thought I had seen it all – a 33-year-old woman comes in with a 14-day history of menstrual bleeding and 49 days since her last menstrual period "What they find in the liver is this: a baby "She had an ectopic pregnancy in her liver. "We see these sometimes in the abdomen but never in the liver. This is a first for me."

The video was watched more than 3 million times and thousands of stunned people left comments. One user said: "This must have been devastating news for the parents I hope mum is well and sorry for your loss. "Someone else said: "I don't even believe this can happen. How does a fertilised egg make it to the liver?" Abdominal pregnancy is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy with an estimated incidence being 1.4 % of all ectopic pregnancies and occurs when an egg travels the wrong way down a fallopian tube and out in the abdomen. It is even rarer to have a pregnancy in the upper abdomen or liver. A study published in the Journal of Emergencies, Trauma, and Shock in 2012 described a young woman who was found to have a live 18-week foetus attached to her liver. Tragically, the 25-year-old woman died from complications during surgery due to uncontrolled bleeding. According to a 2003 article by BBC News, there have only been four babies born alive after implanting in the liver.
