Summer brings rising temperatures, leading to increased sweating and dehydration that can worsen health issues. The intense heat makes outdoor activities uncomfortable and can lead to heat strokes, as well as various skin problems, headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. To reduce these risks, it’s important to prepare adequately before going outside.

Here are essential items to carry during summer outings to prevent heat-related issues:

  • Water Bottle: Dehydration is common in summer; keep a water bottle with you and consider an extra for long trips to stay hydrated.
  • Handkerchief: To manage sweating, carry handkerchiefs or wipes to clean your face frequently. This helps prevent itching and sweat spots, as wipes can also maintain skin hydration.
  • Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen before heading outside to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that cause spots and dullness. A scarf can offer additional sun protection.
  • Glucose: Heat can deplete your body's sugar levels, so include glucose sources like glucose powder or chocolate to keep your energy up.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes with sunglasses; they prevent blurriness, reduce watery eyes, and minimize dizziness and eye strain.

 

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is a serious condition that occurs when the body overheats due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures or strenuous physical activity in hot weather. It requires immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of Heatstroke:

  1. High Body Temperature (Above 104°F or 40°C)
  2. Hot, Red, Dry, or Damp Skin (Sweating may stop)
  3. Rapid Heartbeat (Strong or weak pulse)
  4. Headache
  5. Dizziness or Lightheadedness
  6. Confusion, Disorientation, or Slurred Speech
  7. Nausea and Vomiting
  8. Muscle Weakness or Cramps
  9. Seizures
  10. Loss of Consciousness (Fainting or Coma in severe cases)

What to Do in Case of Heat Stroke:

  1. Call Emergency Services Immediately
  2. Move the Person to a Cooler Place (Shade or an air-conditioned area)
  3. Cool the Body Down
  4. Apply cold water to the skin
  5. Use ice packs (on armpits, groin, neck, and back)
  6. Fan air while misting with water
  7. Give Fluids (If Conscious) – Small sips of cool water or an electrolyte drink
  8. Remove Excess Clothing
