Skin related complaints tend to rise during summer. The darkening and irritation of the skin around the lips prove to be a particularly troublesome issue for many. Due to the delicate nature of the skin in this area of the face, it is particularly susceptible to sun, sweat, dust, and dehydration. These factors initially cause mild darkening, which can worsen into roughness and dryness if untreated.

There are several underlying causes for this problem. Prolonged exposure to sunlight triggers an increase in the skin's melanin production, resulting in skin darkening. Additionally, perspiration causes irritation in the affected area. Some individuals have a habit of frequently licking their lips, which further dries out the skin and exacerbates the irritation. Factors such as dehydration, the use of unsuitable skincare products, and chemical-laden lip products also contribute to this issue.

Instead of costly products, simple home remedies can effectively address lip darkening. Sandalwood, with its natural cooling properties, can soothe irritation and lighten dark lips when applied as a paste of sandalwood powder and rose water. Ghee (clarified butter) deeply nourishes the skin; applying a small amount before bed can soften the skin, reduce dryness, and gradually lighten the area.

Cooling cucumber juice provides immediate relief and reduces sun-induced tanning. A yogurt and honey mask moisturizes and softens the skin, reducing irritation and promoting a fresh appearance. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, eating fresh fruits, and maintaining good skin hygiene is crucial. Avoid lip-licking, harsh scrubs, and chemical-laden products, and protect your face from the sun.
