Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of the Marathi New Year. This year, due to the Kshaya (omission) of specific lunar dates (Tithis), there may be some confusion regarding the exact date and timing; however, according to scriptural tradition, March 19, 2026, has been designated as the definitive day for the New Year's inception. As one of the three-and-a-half most auspicious Muhurats (propitious moments) of the year, this day holds unparalleled significance.
When exactly is Gudi Padwa, and what is the auspicious timing (Muhurat)?
This year, Phalguna Amavasya (the New Moon day of the month of Phalguna) falls on March 18, concluding on March 19 at 6:52 AM. Immediately thereafter, Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada (the first day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra) will commence, simultaneously marking the beginning of Chaitra Navratri.
Auspicious time for hoisting the Gudi: Anytime after 6:53 AM.
Panchang (Almanac) and Ganapati Pujan (Worship of Lord Ganesha): Should be performed only after 6:53 AM.
Special Note: Since the Tithi (lunar date) for the New Year becomes effective only after the conclusion of Amavasya*, performing all religious rituals after 6:53 AM would be in accordance with scriptural guidelines.
Gudi Padwa to Ram Navami: Reciting the Ram Raksha Stotra 13 times daily will bring about a rise in fortune; discover the ritual for attaining mastery over the mantra.
The Scripturally Prescribed Method for Hoisting the Gudi
- The Gudi is also referred to as the 'Brahmadwaj' (The Banner of Brahma). While hoisting it, the following guidelines should be observed:
- Cleanliness and Ritual Bathing: Wake up at dawn, thoroughly clean the house, and perform an Abhyangasnan (ritual oil bath).
- Toran and Rangoli: Adorn the main entrance with a Toran (decorative archway) made of mango leaves and marigold flowers. Draw a beautiful Rangoli (decorative floor pattern) in the courtyard.
- Preparing the Gudi: Wash and thoroughly clean a Velu (bamboo) staff. At its very tip, tie a piece of rich, brocaded cloth, a string of Gathi (sugar candies), a sprig of Neem leaves, and a garland of flowers. Kalash: Place a copper or silver pot (known as a Gadu or Loti) upside down atop the staff.
- The Gudi should be hoisted at a prominent, elevated spot in the presence of all family members.
When to Lower the Gudi?
After celebrating the festival with joy throughout the day, and before sunset, offer turmeric (Haldi), vermilion (Kumkum), and sacred rice grains (Akshata) to the Gudi. Offer a heartfelt salutation, and then lower the Gudi with reverence and dignity.
