Every year, Shiv Jayanti is celebrated on February 19 across Maharashtra and various parts of India to honour Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire and one of Maharashtra’s greatest warriors. Born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort in Pune district, Shivaji Maharaj was the son of Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai.
Shivaji Maharaj laid the foundation of the Maratha Empire with his courageous leadership and strong military hold. He successfully established an independent state, freeing it from the rule of the Adil Shah, the Sultanate of Bijapur and later expanding his kingdom through battles against the Mughal Empire. His exceptional military strategies enabled him to capture several forts and build a formidable army.
Beyond his military prowess, Shivaji Maharaj was known for his progressive governance. He upheld the principles of religious tolerance and social harmony, ensuring that his administration included people from all castes and religions. He was also a strong advocate for women’s dignity and safety, enforcing strict laws to protect them.
