Holi — the vibrant festival of colors celebrated across India and many parts of the world — is a time of joy, laughter, and togetherness. The festival’s traditional sweets and drinks aren’t just tasty; they are symbols of happiness, sharing, and the sweetness of life. From rich milk‑based desserts to refreshing drinks, Holi food spreads cheer just like the colors in the air.

1. Gujiya – Festive Sweet Dumpling

 

Ingredients:

  • All‑purpose flour

  • Ghee

  • Mawa/khoya

  • Sugar

  • Cardamom, chopped nuts (almonds, cashews)

Steps:

  1. Mix flour and ghee to make a soft dough; rest for 20 minutes.

  2. For the filling, crumble mawa and roast with sugar, cardamom, and nuts.

  3. Divide dough into small portions, roll into circles.

  4. Place filling, fold and seal edges.

  5. Deep fry in hot ghee until golden.

  6. Drain, cool, and serve.

Gujiyas are the quintessential sweet for Holi — crispy on the outside, rich inside.

2. Thandai – Traditional Holi Drink

 

Ingredients:

  • Milk

  • Almonds, pistachios, fennel seeds

  • Cardamom

  • Sugar

Steps:

  1. Soak dry nuts and spices for a few hours.

  2. Grind to a smooth paste with a bit of milk.

  3. Add the rest of the milk and sugar.

  4. Strain and chill.

  5. Serve cold with a sprinkle of nuts on top.

Thandai is refreshing and aromatic — perfect for beating the Holi heat while keeping spirits high.

3. Malpua – Syrup‑Soaked Sweet Pancake

 

Ingredients:

  • Flour, semolina (sooji)

  • Milk

  • Sugar syrup

  • Cardamom, saffron

Steps:

  1. Make a batter with flour, semolina, milk, cardamom.

  2. Rest briefly.

  3. Pour small ladles onto hot oil, fry until crisp edges.

  4. Soak in warm sugar syrup.

  5. Serve garnished with nuts.

Malpua’s golden crispness soaked in fragrant syrup makes it a beloved Holi fest treat.

4. Gulab Jamun – Sweet Syrup Balls

 

Ingredients:

  • Khoya or milk powder

  • Flour

  • Sugar syrup with cardamom

Steps:

  1. Prepare a soft dough with khoya/milk powder and flour.

  2. Form smooth balls; avoid cracks.

  3. Deep fry on low‑medium heat until even golden.

  4. Transfer into warm cardamom sugar syrup.

  5. Soak for 10–15 min and serve.

Gulab jamun’s syrupy sweetness makes it a must‑have dessert at festive gatherings.

5. Paan Shots or Refreshing Drink – Mouth‑Refreshing Holi Sipper

 

Ingredients:

  • Betel leaves

  • Sweet condensed milk

  • Rose petals or syrup

  • Ice

Steps:

  1. Blend betel leaves with condensed milk and sweet elements.

  2. Strain mixture into shot glasses.

  3. Chill and serve as a fun drink after sweets.

A modern twist on traditional paan — this refreshing drink cools the palate after rich sweets.
