Sunscreen is often considered the go-to solution for protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Most people usually apply it only before heading outdoors to avoid tanning and sun damage. However, the belief that sunscreen is needed only when stepping outside is a common misconception. In reality, harmful UV rays can pass through glass windows and continue to affect the skin even while indoors.

Apart from sunlight, the blue light emitted from electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and televisions can also impact skin health. This is why skincare experts advise using sunscreen not just outdoors, but indoors as well. Simply put, wearing sunscreen at home is equally important for keeping the skin protected and healthy. Here’s why applying sunscreen indoors should be a part of your daily skincare routine.

UV Rays Entering Through Windows: The sun emits two types of ultraviolet rays: UVA and UVB. While window glass can typically block UVB rays, it is unable to block UVA rays.

UVA rays can penetrate through glass, reaching directly into rooms, living areas, and believe it or not even the interiors of cars. These rays penetrate deep into the skin, damaging collagen and elastin; this leads to issues such as wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Blue Light Emitted from Gadgets: In reality, we spend a significant portion of our time indoors in front of laptops, smartphones, televisions, and tablets. These digital screens and LED lights emit blue light. Much like the sun's rays, this blue light also induces oxidative stress within the skin. This leads to increased melanin production in the skin, resulting in facial pigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.

The Risk of Photoaging: If your face has started to show signs of premature aging—even without exposure to direct sunlight—the reason could be the failure to use sunscreen while indoors. This phenomenon is known as photoaging. When the skin is constantly exposed to UVA rays and screen emissions, it loses its natural radiance and begins to appear lifeless. Therefore, it is essential to apply sunscreen even when you are at home.
