Masi Magam, also known as Maasi Makam, is celebrated every year with great spiritual significance in Tamil Nadu. On this occasion, various temples hold the Teerthavari festival. It is believed that not only humans but also deities take part in the holy dip during these sacred days.

Importance of Masi MonthMasi is the ninth month in the Tamil calendar and is considered highly auspicious. Among the significant occasions in this month, Maha Shivaratri holds prime importance, followed by Masi Magam or Maasi Makam.

Masi Magam is observed on the day when the Magam star aligns during the Masi month. This day holds great spiritual value, as it is believed to cleanse one's sins and bestow divine blessings.

Holy Bath in the Mahamaham TankOn the day of Masi Magam, a sacred bath is performed at the Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam. Devotees from various places gather to take part in this holy ritual on Masi Magam.

Significance of Masi Magam 2025It is believed that taking a dip in sacred water bodies like rivers, temple ponds or the sea on this day brings immense blessings and absolves past sins. According to legend, on this occasion, all holy rivers, including the Ganges, converge at the Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam. Thus, taking a holy dip here is said to remove sins and bring divine grace.

Important Events of Masi MagamIt is said that Goddess Parvati incarnated as Darshini, the daughter of Lord Shiva, on this day. According to religious beliefs, childless couples who take a holy dip on this day receive the blessing of parenthood.

Masi Magam is also associated with an event where Lord Shiva freed Varuna Bhagavan from a curse. Worshipping both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on this day is considered highly auspicious. Performing ancestral rites (Tarpanam) on this day is believed to bring liberation from past karmic debts and offer peace to departed souls.

Worship and Rituals of Masi MagamOn Masi Magham, not only Lord Shiva but also Lord Murugan is widely worshipped. It is believed that on this day, Lord Murugan imparted the Pranava Mantra to Lord Shiva.

Devotees can worship any deity, including Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Murugan, Lord Vishnu, ancestors, and Kula Deivam (family deity), on this day. Observing a fast and offering prayers on Masi Magham is believed to bring prosperity and well-being.

Additionally, the Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 10:50 AM on March 12, making it an ideal time for Shiva worship. Chaturdashi is particularly dedicated to Lord Shiva, and praying on this day is believed to provide liberation from all sins. Taking a holy dip in water bodies during this period is said to bring immense spiritual benefits.
