During Ramzan, Muslims across the world observe fasts for 29 or 30 days and devote themselves to worship. The first ten days of the month are associated with mercy, the next ten with blessings and the final ten with forgiveness. Worship, fasting, night prayers (Tarawih) and recitation of the Quran hold special significance during this period.

Throughout the holy month, Muslims offer five daily prayers and practise self-restraint and discipline. Fasting during Ramzan is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj.

According to Islamic belief, the gates of heaven open during Ramzan and the prayers of those who fast are answered. Muslims observe the fast from sunrise to sunset. The fast begins with a pre-dawn meal called Sehri and ends after sunset with Iftari. Breaking the fast with dates is considered Sunnah. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad would break his fast with dates, a tradition that continues today.
