Flag hoisting and flag unfurling are two separate ceremonial practices in India, observed on different national occasions with distinct meanings and historical backgrounds. While both involve the national flag, they are performed on different dates, by different constitutional authorities, and symbolise different milestones in the country’s journey. Independence Day on August 15 reflects India’s freedom from colonial rule, whereas Republic Day on January 26 marks the adoption of the Constitution. This difference is reflected in the way the Tricolour is displayed, the protocol followed, and the significance attached to each ceremony during these two important national celebrations.

Independence Day - Flag Hoisting

Many people believe flag hoisting and flag unfurling are the same, but their meaning and history differ. On August 15, 1947, India became independent after nearly 150 years of British rule. Independence Day is marked by flag hoisting, which means raising the national flag from the bottom of the pole to the top. This tradition began when the British flag was lowered and the Indian Tricolour was raised in its place. Since then, lifting the flag upward has symbolised freedom, sovereignty, and the emergence of India as an independent nation.

Republic Day - Flag Unfluring

Republic Day, celebrated on January 26, follows the tradition of flag unfurling. In this ceremony, the national flag is already tied at the top of the flagpole before the event begins. When it is unfurled, flower petals placed inside the folds shower down, creating a visually symbolic moment. The Prime Minister hoists the flag on Independence Day, while the President of India unfurls the Tricolour on Republic Day. Flag hoisting represents liberation from foreign rule, whereas flag unfurling symbolises the implementation of the Constitution and the unity of the republic.

HistoricalTradition

The practice of flag hoisting on Independence Day began when India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Tricolour at the Red Fort on August 15, 1947. This act set a tradition that continues to this day, with the Prime Minister hoisting the flag at the Red Fort every year. On January 26, the President unfurls the national flag to mark Republic Day. This occasion celebrates the day the Constitution came into force, granting justice, equality, liberty, and fundamental rights to every Indian citizen.

* **National Celebrations**

  Every year, both flag hoisting on Independence Day and flag unfurling on Republic Day are observed with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour across the country. These national festivals are celebrated in schools, colleges, government offices, public institutions, residential areas, and city squares. People gather to honour the national flag, remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters, and reaffirm their commitment to constitutional values. Together, these ceremonies strengthen national unity and remind citizens of India’s journey from colonial rule to a sovereign, democratic republic.
