Shab-e-Barat is observed on the night of the 14th or 15th of Shaban as per the Islamic calendar. Based on crescent moon sighting of Shaban in India, the sacred night of Shab-e-Barat is expected to be marked on February 3, 2026. A large number of Muslims observe Nafl Roza (voluntary fasting) on this occasion.
Fasting on Shab-e-Barat is considered Sunnah and a voluntary act of worship. Since the Islamic day begins at sunset (Maghrib), there is often confusion about the dates. For the convenience of devotees, we have listed the Iftar and Sehri timings for February 2, 3 and 4 for major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, Patna and Hyderabad.
Fasting on Shab-e-Barat
Holy Night: From the evening of Tuesday, February 3 to Fajr (sunrise) on Wednesday, February 4.
Fasting: Most devotees will observe the fast of the 15th of Shaban, which falls on Wednesday, February 4, this year.
Nafil Roza: Many people also prefer to keep fasts for three consecutive days on the 13th, 14th and 15th of Shaban (2, 3 and 4 February).

Shab-e-Barat Significance
Shab-e-Barat is known as the Night of Forgiveness. According to Islamic belief, on this night Allah opens the doors of mercy for people who ask for forgiveness. It is also believed that a person’s fate and sustenance for the coming year are recorded on this night.

Worship and Traditions
On this night, many Muslims stay awake in mosques and homes, offering special prayers (nafl namaaz), reciting the Quran and making dua. Visiting graveyards and praying for the departed, known as Dua-e-Maghfirat, is also a common practice. Many people also distribute food, especially halwa and other sweets, as an act of charity.
