Weight gain is a common concern today, with many people actively seeking ways to shed excess pounds. Various methods are employed, including exercises like gym workouts, yoga, and Zumba, as well as different diets. In this weight loss journey, individuals often restrict certain foods, avoiding oily, ghee-rich, junk, and sweet items. A prevalent belief is that drinking cold water can lead to weight gain, prompting many to avoid it. However, does cold water really contribute to weight gain? Additionally, warm or hot water is often recommended for weight loss.

According to fitness coach Priyank Mehta, featured in a video on the Instagram account getsetfit, addresses this question.

1. Does drinking cold water make you gain weight?

Mehta explains that thermogenesis is a crucial physiological process that generates heat in the body. Maintaining an optimal body temperature is essential. During exercise, our bodies burn calories to produce heat, which is also needed for digestion. When we consume cold water, our body burns calories to warm it up, helping to regulate internal temperature. This indicates that drinking cold water does not lead to weight gain; rather, it can aid in burning excess calories.

2. Is drinking cold water beneficial or harmful?

While it's clear that cold water does not cause weight gain, excessive consumption or relying solely on cold water can lead to other health issues, such as colds, coughs, sore throats, stomach aches, headaches, and bloating. Therefore, it's important to consume cold water in moderation.
