Maharashtra’s Raigad Police has arrested a man who poisoned and killed his two sisters over a property dispute. The two sisters died within a span of four days after drinking a soup made by their brother, identified as Ganesh Mohite. On October 16, Sonali Shankar Mohite (34) died at a hospital in Alibaug while undergoing treatment for food poisoning symptoms. The body was claimed by her brother Ganesh Mohite.

On October 20, their mother, Jaimala (56), lodged a complaint alleging that she suspected that some relatives had fed poison to her daughters. That is when a murder case was registered and the crime branch was tasked with conducting a parallel probe with the local police. During the probe, it was learned that a family dispute had been brewing with Ganesh on one side and his sisters with their mother on the other.Ganesh had transferred his family house in his name after their father, a forest department official, died in 2009, police said. Also, he managed to convince his mother and sisters to give consent for him to get a job in the forest department on compassionate grounds by assuring the trio that he would support them financially. He got the job in 2021.Police said at some point, Ganesh had withdrawn money from his mother’s bank account by forging her signature. This resulted in the mother requesting forest officials to recruit one of her daughters in her husband’s place, angering Ganesh.“Days before the sisters died, Ganesh had searched the internet 53 times for information on poisonous substances,” a crime branch officer said. “Also, we have found a pamphlet of rat poison in his car.”Police claimed Ganesh has confessed to poisoning his sisters.Police have arrested Ganesh Mohite and he has been remanded in police custody till October 25.
