Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give reservation to the Maratha community. Uddhav Thackeray has demanded that the Central Government should take initiative to give reservation to the Maratha community and give reservation through the Central Backward Classes Commission.

After the Supreme Court rejected the law of reservation to the Maratha community in Maharashtra, it was said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray would write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard and if needed, he will take a delegation also for a follow-up on the same.

In this letter, a demand has been made to Narendra Modi to give reservation to the Maratha community through the Central Backward Classes Commission. The letter has demanded 12 per cent reservation in education for the Maratha community and 13 per cent in government jobs.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has also given detailed information about the efforts made by the state government for Maratha reservation in his letter to the Prime Minister. It gives all the information like the ordinance brought by the government, Gaikwad Commission, the law made in the legislature.

The Supreme Court last week struck down the reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for the Maratha community brought in by the Maharashtra government in 2018, saying it exceeded the 50 per cent cap imposed earlier. The Supreme Court in its judgment said that there was no valid ground to breach 50 per cent reservation while granting Maratha reservation. The apex court had reserved its verdict last month.
