According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is forming over the Arabian Sea and that it may gradually turn into a cyclone over the east-central Arabian Sea by May 16. This depression will intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next 12 hours.

The cyclone is likely to impact areas including the coast of Kerala, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Goa and Maharashtra. The IMD has issued a warning for fishermen to not venture into the sea till May 17.

The low pressure area in the Arabian Sea is now being transformed into a cyclone, which will move from the coast of Maharashtra to Gujarat to Pakistan. Before that, its impact will be felt on the shores of Maharashtra.

As a result, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and some districts in central Maharashtra are likely to receive rains. The Konkan coast will witness heavy rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast torrential rains with strong winds on May 15 in parts of Goa, Konkan and Vidarbha.

As per IMD, the wind speed of 40-50 km per hour is likely to intensify to 70 km per hour on May 15 and may reach 80 km per hour by May 16. Due to this storm, there is a possibility of rain along with thunderstorm in many parts of Maharashtra. Alert has been issued in the coastal areas of Konkan against the backdrop of Cyclone Tauktae. Citizens are also being appealed to. It has been raining in some parts of Raigad and Sindhudurg districts since Friday evening. 

Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray instructed the administration to be fully vigilant in the coastal areas in the wake of Cyclone Tauktae in the Arabian Sea and to take necessary precautionary measures. Uddhav Thackeray also said in a meeting that especially in Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, the impact of the cyclone will be felt and the district collector should be ready and prepare manpower and equipment. Uddhav Thackeray reviewed the preparations regarding Cyclone Tauktae and instructed the District Administration, Divisional Commissioners & District Collectors to be vigilant & well equipped.

  • Konkan - Heavy rains, thunderstorms and gusts of wind
  • Palghar and Raigad - Heavy rains
  • Mumbai, Thane - Light showers
  • Central Maharashtra, Marathwada- Sparse rainfall
  • Vidarbha - Lightning with thunder
