Authorities in Beed district have suspended eight teachers working in primary schools run by the Zilla Parishad after they were found to have allegedly availed government concessions by falsely claiming hearing impairment, officials said on Tuesday. The teachers, posted in different parts of the district, came under scrutiny following a verification process initiated by the education department. The action was taken after an inquiry revealed discrepancies in their disability claims.

According to officials, a detailed medical reassessment was conducted by the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, a premier national institution specializing in speech and hearing disabilities. The reassessment found that the teachers’ level of hearing impairment was significantly below the benchmark required to qualify for government benefits meant for persons with hearing disabilities.

Based on the findings, Jithin Rahman ordered the immediate suspension of the eight teachers and directed that a departmental inquiry be initiated against them. Officials explained that government employees who possess certified disabilities are eligible for various concessions, including reservation benefits in direct recruitment, preferential transfers and promotions, additional travel allowance, exemption from professional tax, and certain income tax benefits.

The verification process was carried out following directives from the State Department of Disability Welfare under the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Authorities said further action will depend on the outcome of the departmental inquiry.
