On the eve of Republic Day, the Government of India announced the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards, recognising eminent personalities for their exceptional contributions across fields such as art, sports, literature, social service, healthcare and public life. The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremonial function in New Delhi. This year’s honours list includes several senior political leaders from different states, acknowledged for their long public careers, leadership roles and influence on governance, social movements and administrative reforms that have shaped regional and national politics over the years.

Bhagat Singh Koshyari – Padma BhushanFormer Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been selected for the Padma Bhushan award. A senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, he served as Maharashtra’s governor from 2019 to 2023 and gained prominence during major political developments in the state. He was actively involved during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government period and played a key constitutional role during crucial swearing-in ceremonies, including the early-morning oath of Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, and later the formation of the Eknath Shinde-led government. During his tenure, he also held additional charge as the Governor of Goa.

V. S. Achuthanandan – Posthumous Padma VibhushanFormer Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has been posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan. A veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he served as Kerala’s chief minister from 2006 to 2011 and was among the founding members of the party. Known for his uncompromising stand against corruption, Achuthanandan had a long association with labour movements and grassroots politics. He passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 101. The honour recognises his decades-long commitment to ideology-driven politics and public welfare.

Shibu Soren – Posthumous Padma BhushanFormer Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren has been posthumously conferred with the Padma Bhushan. A three-time chief minister and founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Soren played a decisive role in the movement that led to the formation of Jharkhand as a separate state. He was widely respected as a mass leader who consistently fought for the rights of tribal communities and marginalised sections of society. Soren passed away on August 4, 2025, at the age of 81. His political legacy continues through his son Hemant Soren.

Vijay Kumar Malhotra – Posthumous Padma BhushanLate senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra has been named for the Padma Bhushan posthumously. A five-time Member of Parliament from Delhi, he was known for his strong presence in national politics. One of the most notable moments of his political career was his victory over former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections. The award acknowledges his long-standing contribution to parliamentary democracy and public service.

Vellappally Natesan – Padma BhushanKerala-based social leader Vellappally Natesan has been awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to social reform and community leadership. A prominent leader of the Ezhava community and the general secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, he has played a significant role in strengthening the social and political voice of the community. Through organisational work and advocacy, Natesan has worked towards empowerment, social equality and greater political participation for historically marginalised groups in Kerala.
