Mumbai residents are lavishly commemorating Gudi Padwa, the start of the Marathi New Year. Two of the most prominent features of the city's Gudi Padwa celebrations are the Nav Varsh Swagat Yatras and the Shobha Yatras. The Shobha Yatra in Girgaon is one of the most well-known processions, however, similar ones are done throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. The fact that women wear traditional Kasta saris and men wear kurta-pyjamas during the Yatra adds to the festive mood. The bike rally, where ladies and other participants adorn their bikes and ride together in celebration, is one of the event's unique elements. Mumbaikars are all set for this year’s bike rally at Girgaon.
A participant told ANI, “This is a bike rally in which the women from Girgaon participate and celebrate. Gudi Padwa is our Nav Varsh, and we celebrate it together. We hardly get time to catch up with each other so we meet on such occasions and it feels very good.”
The Shobha Yatra draws thousands of visitors from all across the city each year.
