The entire country went under lockdown in March to curb the spread of coronavirus disease. Many businesses were also shut down due to the lockdown. Mumbai's life line local trains were also shut to avoid crowding and curb the spread. In June the government allowed only limited people to travel by local trains, including those engaged in essential services.

There has been discussions in the state over Maharashtra government soon resume local train services for all.

However State health minister Rajesh Tope said,"We will have to see the number of post-New Year coronavirus patients first. If the number does not increase significantly, then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will consider resuming railway service for all. He is quite positive about it. Mumbai locals are lifeline of the people. We understand that due to its closure common man has to face many problems."
