In a significant development for Maharashtra politics, Jayant Patil resigned from his position as the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) on Saturday, July 12, according to local media reports.  According to reports, senior party leader and former minister Shashikant Shinde is likely the leading contender to become the new state president. The reports also suggest that Shinde will take charge as the party president on July 15, 2025.

Earlier, on the foundation day of NCP-SP, Patil expressed his desire to resign from the post. He said that party founder Sharad Pawar had given him many opportunities in the past seven years, and now, it's time for new faces in the head post.

Patil said that Pawar Saheb would make the right decision and that I would request him to choose a new face. "We have a long way to go," he said. Shashikant Shinde spoke to ABP News regarding Jayant Patil's resignation. He said he would accept whatever decision the party supremo takes. "Pawar Saheb, Supriya Tai, Jayant Patil, and whatever decision the party takes will be acceptable," he added.

Shinde said that there will be party meeting on July 15 in which some of their leaders names will be discussed. "My name is also in the discussion," he said. He further said, "I have no idea whose names are being discussed."

"The party has yet to decide on the post of state president. I have only received a message that there is a meeting of the party leaders. Whatever the decision is, we will stand united to build the party," Shinde told the news channel.
