A sessions court in Kolhapur on Friday extended the police custody of Prashant Koratkar till March 30. He is accused of threatening historian Indrajit Sawant over a phone call and making remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that could create communal tension. Koratkar’s initial three-day custodial remand ended on Friday. Koratkar was arrested at Mancherial railway station in Telangana. According to reports, he was planning to travel to Chennai to escape arrest.

He was brought to court under heavy security around 8 a.m. to prevent any crowding or possible attack. As Koratkar was being taken into police custody, a man dressed as a lawyer attempted to attack him. The man hurled abuses and rushed toward him but was stopped by police officers. Police detained the attacker for further questioning.

The prosecution sought a five-day extension of his remand, arguing that police needed to identify those who helped him evade arrest for a month. The prosecution said Koratkar had provided only sketchy details about how he avoided capture. His lawyer, Saurabh Ghag, opposed the extension and argued that the three-day custody was sufficient. Meanwhile, police have collected voice samples to verify whether he made the alleged call to Sawant.
