Former BJP mayor Suresh Pawar, contesting on a Shiv Sena ticket from Ward No. 6, was defeated by the BJP candidate.
In the 2017 LMC elections, the BJP had won 36 seats and Congress 33.
Political observers said controversial remarks by Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan about late Congress leader and former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh days before polling may have consolidated support for Congress. Chavan had said memories of Deshmukh, a two-time CM from Latur, would be “wiped out” from his hometown. Chavan later apologised.
