Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Wednesday wrote to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to take a call on demands raised by Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the assembly Devendra Fadnavis pertaining to the extension of monsoon session, holding Assembly Speaker's election and OBC reservation restoration in line with the SC order.

The Maharashtra government has planned to conduct the Monsoon Assembly session only for two days in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Fadnavis had slammed the state government saying it always attempts to avoid holding the Assembly under the pretext of COVID-19 situation.

"The state government always tries to ignore assembly sessions citing COVID-19. The government again proposed the monsoon session for two days, while thousands of people can come for the inauguration of ruling party's offices or protests or oath-taking ceremonies," Fadnavis had said. He accused the state government of not discussing many issues of importance, including those of farmers and Maratha reservations.

The Other Backward Classes (OBC) had lost their political reservations in the local bodies of Maharashtra comprising of municipal corporations, municipal councils, zilla parishads, gram panchayats etc. This is after the Supreme Court rejected the state government's review petition concerning reservation to the OBCs. The SC also observed that the reservation in the favour of the OBC in local bodies should not result in exceeding the 50 per cent cap in reservation quota.
