Devendra Fadnavis on Friday presented the Maharashtra State Budget for the financial year 2025–26 in the state legislature, outlining a roadmap focused on smart agriculture, inclusive development and economic growth. According to the state’s Economic Survey, Maharashtra’s economy is expected to grow by 7.9%, making it one of the most dynamic economies in the country. During his speech, Fadnavis placed strong emphasis on ‘smart farming’ and farmer empowerment, announcing several initiatives aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector.
Major announcements for farmers
Mahavistar AI initiative:
Under the ‘Mahavistar’ AI platform, around 30 lakh farmers will receive real-time agricultural guidance, including technical farming advice and market-related information through advanced technology.
Vasudha message service:
For farmers who do not own smartphones, the government will launch ‘Vasudha’, a messaging service that will deliver information about government schemes directly to their mobile phones.
Gopinath Munde Accident Insurance Scheme:
The government has decided to extend the scheme to include farm labourers, a move described as a major step towards broader social security in the agricultural sector.
Chief Minister Rural Livestock Industry Scheme:
A new programme will be introduced to boost rural livestock-based businesses and strengthen the rural economy.
Women farmer empowerment:
Special initiatives will be launched to encourage entrepreneurship among women farmers, helping them participate more actively in agricultural and allied industries.
Expansion of digital services:
The government also plans to deliver all key welfare schemes digitally to farmers, ensuring benefits reach them directly at the farm level.
Target of $5 trillion economy by 2047
Expressing confidence in the state’s economic trajectory, Fadnavis said that large-scale investments in infrastructure and improved ease of doing business are enhancing Maharashtra’s competitiveness. “We have set a goal of expanding the state’s economy to $5 trillion by 2047. Special milestones are also being planned as Maharashtra prepares to celebrate its Amrit Mahotsav in 2035,” he said.
Strengthening local self-governance
Fadnavis also announced that special provisions will be made to strengthen urban and rural local self-government bodies, enabling them to become more capable and financially independent. He added that balanced growth across agriculture, industry and services will be key to achieving the projected 7.9% economic growth rate for the state.
