Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde performed Bhumi Pujan and inaugurated Parivahan Bhavan in Mumbai on March 2. They laid the foundation stone for the new headquarters of the state’s transport department, ‘Parivahan Bhavan.’
The State Transport Department was founded on March 1, 1940, to oversee road transport. Ever since, March 1 has been designated as "Transport Day." The foundation ceremony for the four-story "Parivahan Bhavan" was held at Sir Pochkhanwala Road in Worli to commemorate this milestone.
The 12,800-square-meter new structure will have a four-story underground parking structure that can accommodate 150 four-wheelers. It is anticipated that the construction will be finished in two and a half years.
The transport department has never had its headquarters, even though it brings in Rs. 15,000 crore for the state annually. The department has been based out of a rented building for the past 85 years. In his first meeting as minister of transportation, Sarnaik presented the idea for a distinct headquarters.
