The Maharashtra government plans to launch ferry services between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai for the general public to avoid traffic snarls and save commute time.

The move is also to control the crowd in local trains. The ferry will start from Mumbai's Princess Dock and will end its journey at Belapur.

Mumbai Port Trust chief Rajeev Jalota said, majority of the work in this regard has been completed and some minor works have to be done, which will be finalised very soon.

The ferry will have several stops including ones at Vashi, Nerul, Airoli and Thane's Meeth Bunder. "Using waterways, the distance between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai can be covered in one hour.

Jalota said in the coming years, Ro-Ro and RoPax services will also be launched on the route and preparation for the same is almost at the final stage.
