The Maharashtra Legislative Council has passed the Motor Vehicle Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introducing key changes in vehicle taxation. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that middle-class four-wheelers and two-wheelers will not face a tax hike. However, electric vehicles costing over Rs 30 lakh will now be taxed at 6%.

Additionally, only vehicles equipped with student safety systems will be granted licences. The state government also plans to take strict action against Chinese-made vehicles violating traffic rules and will soon introduce a comprehensive parking policy.

The bill aims to streamline the Motor Vehicles Act, shifting the tax basis from vehicle weight to price while increasing the maximum tax limit to reflect current market values. Sarnaik stated that many electric vehicles cost between Rs 50-60 lakh, making tax exemptions for such high-end models unfeasible.

The revised tax structure includes a 1% increase for four-wheelers running on CNG and LPG, while two-wheelers, three-wheelers, motor vehicles, and omni-buses are now taxed up to a maximum price of Rs 30 lakh. Additionally, construction-related vehicles such as cranes, compressors, and projectors will be taxed at 7%.
