The winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will be held in Mumbai instead of Nagpur this year and a formal decision will be taken soon, reliable sources said.

The decision to hold the session in Mumbai was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet on Thursday. The Nagpur session was discussed at the state cabinet meeting on Thursday. The Coronavirus threat still persists and a second wave of the virus is expected in December, as per experts. It is important to avoid crowds and maintain social distance.

As per media reports, holding the winter session of the legislature in Nagpur has been ruled out in December because of the pandemic. Incidentally, a majority of ministers from Vidarbha have not shown interest in conducting the session in the second capital where a large number of administrative and police personnel need to be deputed from outside to manage the session, be it shorter or longer. It is like shifting the entire government at a considerable cost from Mumbai to Nagpur for the session. CM Thackeray also felt that the movement should be avoided this year.

According to Nagpur accord, one session of state legislature is mandatory in the city. Traditionally, winter session of state legislature is held in Nagpur. This year, the session will begin from December 7. The preparations are on for the session amid Covid-19 pandemic There are apprehensions that Covid infection could increase in the city due to winter session.
