A major chain accident occurred on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway at Khandala’s Bor Ghat around 10:30 am on Thursday, causing panic among commuters. According to initial reports, eight to nine vehicles collided one after another, leading to severe damage to several cars. Despite the intensity of the crash, no casualties have been reported, providing significant relief. A video of the incident has surfaced online and is being widely shared, highlighting the scale of the accident. The mishap took place amid already congested traffic conditions in the Lonavala stretch, which had been experiencing a heavy influx of vehicles since the morning hours.
The traffic congestion was largely attributed to the Chaitra pilgrimage of the Ekvira Devi temple, which had drawn a large number of devotees to the region. As the event concluded, thousands of pilgrims began their return journey, resulting in long queues of vehicles along the expressway. Due to the heavy volume of traffic, vehicles were moving at a slow pace, particularly in the ghat section. Authorities were already on alert, anticipating delays and taking measures to regulate the flow of vehicles in the area.
To manage the situation, highway police had been implementing traffic blocks at regular intervals to ease congestion. During one such phase, when traffic was being released, a speeding truck traveling from Pune towards Mumbai rammed into a vehicle ahead with great force. The impact triggered a chain reaction, causing multiple vehicles to crash into each other in quick succession. Traffic was disrupted for a while after the incident, but police and emergency teams quickly reached the spot, controlled the situation, and gradually restored normal traffic movement.
