Mumbai received the highest rainfall of the season within just 12 hours on Wednesday besides the highest-ever wind speed, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

Mumbai recorded 215.8 mm rain, followed by 101.9 mm in eastern suburbs and 76.03 mm in western suburbs.

Meanwhile, several roads like Mahapalika Marg and Colaba Causeway Road in south Mumbai were blocked and closed for traffic after trees collapsed due to high-velocity winds in the evening.

According to sources, several roads and areas in south Mumbai, which never witnessed water-logging in the past, were flooded and scores of vehicles, including BEST buses, were stranded on roads.

At least 50 trees were uprooted by a wall near the Hanging Gardens on Pedder Road. BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had reached the spot to inspect the work today morning (August 6, 2020). Instructions were also given to the police team to resume vehicular movement at the earliest.

Chahal said,"I have never seen such rain in the last 30 years.  Mumbai or any other city in the world will collapse with such heavy rains. The wind was blowing at a speed of 101 kmph in Mumbai yesterday which affected South Mumbai area. I was in Mumbai when the July 26 floods happened. But even then, I had never seen such rains."

"Mumbai city and suburbs are very likely to receive few spells of moderate to heavy rainfall (1-2 cm/hr) during next 3- 4 hrs. accompanied with strongwinds reaching 60-70 kmph occasionally gusting to 80 kmph hrs. during next 3-4 hrs . Possibility of thunder/lightning in some areas," the IMD tweeted.
