Nineteen workers fell ill after a suspected gas leak at an industrial unit in the Tarapur MIDC area on Sunday afternoon. The facility manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and pharmaceutical intermediaries. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the workers’ health deteriorated a few hours after the leak, following which they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over industrial safety in the Tarapur MIDC area, as it is the third gas leak reported in the industrial zone within a month. Earlier, similar incidents had occurred at two other units in the area. According to the report, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Boisar) Vinayak Narale said the police reached the hospital after being informed about the incident. “We arrived at the hospital only after they contacted us.

The process of registering an FIR has begun and we will register it by tonight,” Narale said. Authorities have begun looking into the cause of the leak, while the condition of the affected workers is being monitored. Incidents of gas leak in Tarapur MIDC have sparked criticism, with activists questioning worker safety and regulatory oversight in the industrial zone.
