Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the loss of lives in a fire that broke out in the SNCU of Bhandara District General Hospital at 2 am on Saturday. As many as 10 children died in the accident.

"Heart-wrenching tragedy in Bhandara, Maharashtra, where we have lost precious young lives. My thoughts are with all the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover as early as possible," tweeted PM Modi.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to the micro-blogging website to express grief at the incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

"The fire accident in Bhandara district hospital, Maharashtra is very unfortunate. I am pained beyond words. My thoughts and condolences are with bereaved families. May God give them the strength to bear this irreparable loss," he said.

In the wee hours on Saturday, ten children died in a major fire which broke out in the SNCU unit of hospital. As per Dr Pramod Khandate, Civil Surgeon, Bhandara, Maharashtra, seven children were rescued from the unit.

"There were 17 newborn children admitted in the SNCU unit at the time when the fire broke out. The nurse on duty opened the door of the unit and saw a large amount of smoke in the room. She immediately told the hospital officials and fire brigades were called," he said.
