Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Jayanti is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country, with political leaders and Shivaji’s admirers extending their tributes. However, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has sparked a new controversy with his tribute to the legendary Maratha king on social media. In his tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi offered his "Shraddhanjali" (homage) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj instead of using the term "Adaranjali" (respectful tribute), which is typically used on such occasions. This has drawn criticism, especially from those who believe that it shows unintentional disrespect toward a figure held in great esteem, particularly in Maharashtra.

Rahul Gandhi wrote: “On the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Jayanti, I offer my humble 'Shraddhanjali'. With his courage and bravery, he inspired us to raise our voices fearlessly and with full dedication. His life will always remain an inspiration to all of us.”

While many have appreciated the sentiment, the choice of the word "Shraddhanjali" has sparked backlash, with critics accusing him of a lack of understanding of the cultural significance of Shivaji Maharaj. BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar has demanded that Rahul Gandhi retract his post and replace "Shraddhanjali" with "Adaranjali." He further warned that if the post is not amended, legal action could follow.

Earlier, in the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned against those trying to insult the great maratha warrior. Those who try to insult Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will be shown their "real place" and the state will not forgive them, Fadnavis told reporters after paying homage to the Maratha king at Shivneri Fort in Pune district.Notably, actor Rahul Solapurkar had stirred a row with his comments about Shivaji Maharaj.
