Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's Bhaiyaji Joshi sparked controversy with a statement in Mumbai suggesting Gujarati was the language of Ghatkopar and implying not all Mumbaikars need speak Marathi. Following the ensuing controversy, Joshi clarified that as Mumbai is part of Maharashtra, Marathi is undeniably the language of Mumbai.
Joshi further emphasized India's linguistic harmony, where diverse language speakers coexist peacefully. While acknowledging Mumbai's multilingualism, Joshi expressed the expectation that those relocating to Maharashtra should learn Marathi, a culturally rich language, while also respecting their own. He declined to comment on the ensuing political debate.
Bhaiyaji Joshi's clarification
"I think there has been a misunderstanding due to a statement I made. The language of Maharashtra is Marathi and Mumbai is a part of Maharashtra, so there is no reason for there to be any disagreement about the language of Mumbai being Marathi. One special thing about India is that people speaking different languages get along with each other here. Language does not create any problems between them. That is why India is an ideal example before the world. There are multilingual people in Mumbai too and they maintain a close relationship with each other, which is why Mumbai's life goes on. Naturally, we all expect that those who come from outside should learn and study Marathi along with their language. Marathi is a culturally rich language. We think that many people should study it. I do not want to talk about the politics going on over my statement, it is not my subject."
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, responding to the controversy, affirmed the government's unwavering stance: Marathi is the language of Mumbai and Maharashtra, and all residents should learn it. He stated that the government respects all languages and believes only those who love their own language can appreciate others. He expressed confidence Joshi would not disagree with his statement.
