A forty-year-old woman, who had tested COVID-19 positive, was allegedly raped at a quarantine centre in Panvel. The accused has been arrested.

Opposition parties have blamed the state government for the incident. "What is the Maharashtra government doing? These things are happening because of their mismanagement and negligence. Some quarantine centres also not providing meals on time," said BJP leader Ram Kadam.

MNS leader Shalini Thackeray also expressed her rage over the incident through Twitter. Due to this incident, the issue of safety of women in the state has been questioned again. Shalini Thackeray in her post wrote,"A female patient was allegedly raped by a male patient at a quarantine center in Panvel, this proves that women are not safe anywhere. Shalini Thackeray demanded from the state government that,"a rapist should not receive any medical treatment or attention from the government that should be his first punishment. And if the he survives from the disease then he should be hanged in the middle of the road."
