Kirit Somaiya has appealed to the Mumbai Mayor, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Mumbai Police to prevent the open slaughter of goats in residential areas during Bakri Eid celebrations later this month.

In a post shared on X, the BJP leader stated that goats should not be slaughtered in residential complexes, housing societies, and chawls during the festival. He said he had written to the Mumbai Mayor, BMC authorities, and the Police Commissioner seeking strict action against violations.

“We will NOT allow open slaughter in the name of religious ceremony,” Somaiya wrote in his post.

Somaiya also addressed a formal letter to Mumbai Mayor Ritu Rajesh Tawde, urging strict enforcement of existing regulations related to animal slaughter within city limits ahead of Bakri Eid 2026, expected to be observed on May 27 subject to moon sighting.

In the letter, the BJP leader alleged that despite restrictions imposed by courts and municipal authorities, some individuals continue to carry out illegal open slaughter of goats during Bakri Eid and other occasions.

He further stated that the Municipal Corporation should issue strict instructions to all ward offices and concerned officials to ensure compliance with slaughter laws. According to Somaiya, ritual sacrifice of goats cannot be performed near residential premises within Mumbai under the relevant regulations.

Meanwhile, ahead of the festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced extensive arrangements at the Deonar Abattoir for Bakri Eid celebrations. Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr Ashwini Joshi said facilities including CCTV surveillance, deployment of security personnel, parking arrangements, food courts, health services, solid waste management systems, and grievance redressal mechanisms have been put in place to manage the festivities smoothly.
