The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will evaluate 1,000 trees across Mumbai. The tree evaluation survey will be called ‘Dead and Dangerous Tree.’ This survey will locate weakened trees along city roads affected by low moisture and excessive concretisation. The BMC came up with this plan because the city is facing a heatwave.

From March 5 to March 12, the civic body authorities will examine over 1,000 trees in the regions where road concreting is being done in Mumbai.

Trees need a good land base around them to grow. The land should be fertile or should have a good and pure soil base around the tree. Officials said that trees need a one-square-metre zone around their roots for healthy growth, but the contractors fail to maintain sufficient space, incorrectly park materials, and disrupt soil stability during operations.

Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner (projects), BMC said that the road department is aware of this law and they should ensure that there is sufficient space around the tree roots.
