In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion between Mumbai and Thane, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has formally started construction on the Eastern Freeway expansion. An elevated corridor between Anand Nagar in Thane and Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar is being built as part of the project. In order to guarantee safe and effective activities, roadblocks have been put in place and preliminary groundwork, including pillar excavation, has started on the highway.

The elevated flyover, which will begin at Ghatkopar and span 12.955 km, will be constructed right above the current Eastern Freeway. The project is expected to cost Rs 2,682 crore, with three lanes on each side and in each direction. When completed, it should bring much-needed traffic relief to one of the busiest areas of the city. The new corridor will cut the travel time from Mumbai to Thane to just 30 to 35 minutes by providing a path that is entirely signal-free. Vehicles leaving South Mumbai will have a continuous route thanks to the elevated road's seamless connection to the current Eastern Freeway.

Since 2014, the Eastern Freeway, a 16.8-kilometer route that runs from PD Mello Rd at CSMT to Cheddha Nagar in Ghatkopar, has provided quick access from South Mumbai. But between Mankhurd and Thane, motorists frequently encountered traffic jams. By removing these delays, the newly raised flyover will enable cars to go from CSMT to Thane without having to deal with traffic jams and signals.

In the meantime, the project's land acquisition is moving forward. Land clearance, which has historically taken a long time, was finished in record time due to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority's (SRA) efforts, which included surveying the area. The existence of 1,694 slum units in the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar region was one of the main challenges. The road's construction under MMRDA is made possible by the government's approval of a comprehensive reconstruction of the settlement. In fact, the authorities will undertake a slum redevelopment initiative for the first time.

When finished, this ground-breaking infrastructure project will improve citywide connectivity, ease commutes, and ease traffic on the Eastern Express Highway, which is now a major thoroughfare to Bhiwandi, Nashik, and Gujarat.
