Mumbai Police’s Malad Police Station has arrested a wanted accused involved in a case of criminal breach of trust and cheating from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The accused has been identified as Dinesh Dangiri Goswami. Following his arrest, the court remanded him to police custody. His wife, Amita Dinesh Goswami, is a co-accused in the case and has been declared absconding.
According to police, the accused couple allegedly cheated a city-based jeweller by misappropriating 1,338 grams of gold worth approximately ₹1.5 crore, which had been given to them for manufacturing gold jewellery.
The complainant, Kunal Shah, is a jeweller by profession and has been residing with his family in Kandivali. He has been in the real gold and diamond jewellery manufacturing business for the past 30 years. Shah runs P.H. Ornament Private Limited, whose head office is located at Prestige Industries Estate on Marve Road in Malad. Shah serves as the Chief Operational Head of the company, while his wife was previously associated with the firm, and his friend Nilesh Dhakan is a director. The company manufactures gold and diamond jewellery and supplies it to other jewellers. In 2018, Shah had also started another firm named Zara Design, engaged in a similar line of business.
In 2022, a woman named Mamta Narendra Goswami joined Shah’s company to learn jewellery designing. During this period, Shah came in contact with her husband Narendra Goswami, who claimed to be working with Titan Company. Narendra informed Shah that Arya Jewels, a company run by Dinesh and Amita Goswami, manufactured gold and diamond jewellery for reputed brands and suggested that Shah’s firm collaborate with them, assuring good profits. Based on this, Shah decided to meet the company’s owners.
Subsequently, Shah met Amita Goswami, director, and Dinesh Goswami, general manager of Arya Jewels. After verifying the company’s past track record, which appeared satisfactory, Shah began business dealings with them. Between July 2022 and September 2024, several small and large jewellery orders were successfully completed on time, further strengthening mutual trust.
Taking this into account, between October and November 2025, Shah’s company handed over 1,338 grams of pure gold worth around ₹1.5 crore to Arya Jewels for manufacturing jewellery. However, the accused failed to deliver the jewellery within the agreed timeframe. When Shah attempted to contact Dinesh and Amita Goswami, both their mobile phones were found switched off. On visiting their office, Shah discovered that the premises had been shut.
It later emerged that Dinesh and Amita Goswami, husband and wife, had fled after misappropriating the gold entrusted to them.
Following the incident, Shah lodged a complaint at Malad Police Station. After verification, police registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against the accused couple and launched a manhunt. During the investigation, police received information that Dinesh Goswami was residing in Ahmedabad. Acting on this tip-off, a team led by Senior Police Inspector Dushyant Chavan arrested him from Ahmedabad after nearly one and a half months.
During interrogation, Dinesh Goswami reportedly confessed to misappropriating the gold with the help of his wife. He was subsequently brought to Mumbai for further legal proceedings. His wife Amita Goswami, named as a co-accused, has been served a legal notice and will be questioned soon. Police said that she is likely to be arrested after interrogation.
Police are also investigating whether the accused couple has cheated other jewellers using a similar modus operandi.
