The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is all set to begin the reconstruction work of 100-year-old Elphinstone Road Over Bridge (ROB) under the Sewri-Worli Connector project. The reconstruction work is likely to begin by April second week the officials said, reported Mid-Day.

The officials said that all the technical and safety protocols have been followed and MMRDA is in the final stages of getting clearance from Mumbai Traffic Police. They expect that Mumbai Police will give a green signal to them for this project by April 10.

The officials said that demolition of this old ROB is quite a time-sensitive task and should be done before monsoon season hits the city, reported Mid-Day.

Once the work begins on April 10, it will mark a major milestone in the project leading way for a modern double-decker structure. This double-decker structure is expected to improve East-West connectivity in Mumbai.

The Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector is 4.5 km long. It is a 4-lane (2+2) divided elevated corridor. This route will serve as a traffic dispersal route for the Mumbai section of Atal Setu. This will also connect Atal Setu to Bandra Worli Sea Link, and Mumbai Coastal Road. It will reduce travel time and provide a signal-free route for commuters travelling between Navi Mumbai and South & Central Mumbai.

This project includes the construction cost of two ROBs, one across the Harbour Line at Sewri and Another across the Central and Western Lines at Prabhadevi (Elphinstone Road). The Elphinstine Road ROB which will soon be demolished, is 13 meters wide and will be replaced with a double-decker bridge designed to handle huge traffic snarls.

Overall 60% work of the Sewri-Worli Connector project has been completed.
