A driver employed by a local Congress leader from Mulund has been arrested for allegedly knocking down a 60-year-old woman while driving under the influence of alcohol.
The accused has been identified as Narendra Jagtap, who works as a driver for Mulund-based Congress leader Rakesh Shetty. Jagtap is responsible for dropping and picking up Shetty’s children from school.
According to police, the incident occurred around 10 am on Wednesday. Jagtap reportedly told Shetty that he was stepping out for tea and took the latter’s Scorpio vehicle. While driving at high speed and in a negligent manner on Mulund Goshala Road, he allegedly ran over the foot of a 60-year-old woman, Meenabai Bhoir.
After the accident, the driver attempted to flee from the spot along with the vehicle. However, alert local residents chased the car, intercepted it, and handed Jagtap over to the police.
The injured woman was immediately rushed to Agrawal Hospital, where doctors found that four toes of one of her feet were fractured. She subsequently underwent surgery.
Meanwhile, the Mulund police conducted a blood test of the accused driver, which confirmed that he had consumed alcohol at the time of the incident.
A case has been registered against Narendra Jagtap, and he has been arrested. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him to two days’ police custody, informed Senior Police Inspector Ajay Joshi of Mulund Police Station.
