The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a major leap towards shaping the future of urban India with its visionary "Mumbai 3.0" plan. Under this initiative, a cutting-edge, inclusive city—dubbed “Third Mumbai”—is set to be developed within the influence zone of the Atal Setu. South Korea has emerged as a strategic partner, showing strong interest in investing in the creation of this next-generation smart city. The goal is to transform the region into a high-tech urban center with state-of-the-art infrastructure, technology zones, and affordable housing.

In a recent high-level meeting between MMRDA officials and senior South Korean representatives, key investment areas were explored. These include transit-oriented development projects, mixed-use townships, industrial clusters, fintech incubation hubs, technology parks, and green urban spaces. MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee emphasized the significance of the collaboration, which is poised to bring global best practices and technological expertise to Mumbai’s urban planning landscape. The discussions also touched upon integrating sustainable transport, AI-based governance, and secure data management systems into the city’s core.

The Third Mumbai project is expected to mirror the success of South Korea’s Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), which evolved into a $100 billion economy through tech-led urban integration. Mumbai aims to learn from IFEZ’s strategies by adopting similar models for logistics, smart housing, and green infrastructure. Korean institutions like KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency) and the World Smart Cities Forum (WSCF) will support investment promotion, innovation exchange, and development planning. The collaboration signals a bold step toward transforming Mumbai into a global innovation and investment hub.
