Two youths were killed and two others injured in a road accident involving high-speed motorcycles on the Eastern Express Highway in Vikhroli East on Tuesday afternoon. The police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and have started an investigation.
According to the police, Amit Baliram Pawar (40), a resident of Shankarwadi in Jogeshwari East, had left his house around 3 pm on March 10 to go to work on his motorcycle. He was travelling towards Thane via the Eastern Express Highway.
At around 3.45 pm, when Pawar reached near the Panchkhadda area in Vikhroli East, a speeding motorcycle coming from behind rammed into his bike. Due to the impact, Pawar fell on the road, while the motorcycle that hit him went ahead and crashed into a tree.
Eyewitnesses said that three youths were riding on the motorcycle that caused the accident, and all three sustained serious injuries after the crash. The front headlight of their motorcycle was completely damaged in the collision. Pawar suffered injuries to his left elbow and right palm.
After the incident, Pawar immediately informed the police by calling the emergency helpline number 100. With the help of locals and the police, the injured were rushed to Swatantryaveer Savarkar Hospital in Mulund East.
Doctors at the hospital declared Praveen Munnalal Yadav (17) and Raj Arjun Kahar (20) dead after examination. The third youth, Gulshan Yadav (20), who sustained serious injuries, was referred to Sion Hospital for further treatment.
Police said the motorcycle was being driven at a high speed and in a negligent manner at the time of the accident, which led to the crash. A case has been registered for rash and negligent driving causing death, and further investigation is underway.
