The much-awaited Bellasis flyover in south Mumbai, linking Tardeo with Mumbai Central railway station, is set to be inaugurated on February 26. The opening ceremony will take place at 11 am through an online event led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with his deputies Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The function will be held in the presence of Mayor Ritu Tawde. According to civic officials, once the formal programme concludes and temporary structures such as the stage and barricades are cleared, the flyover will be opened for vehicular movement, offering improved connectivity in the busy south Mumbai corridor.

The project has drawn attention for being completed well before its scheduled deadline. Authorities confirmed that construction was wrapped up nearly 15 months ahead of time, with the main work finishing last month. However, the formal inauguration was postponed due to the Chief Minister’s packed schedule and discussions regarding a possible renaming of the structure. Officially described as a railway flyover connecting Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central, the bridge no longer prominently carries the Bellasis name. The new structure stretches 333 metres in total length, including a 36.90-metre span over railway tracks, a seven-metre-wide carriageway, and spacious footpaths on both sides to ensure pedestrian safety.

The modern flyover replaces a historic bridge that dated back to 1893. Following a structural assessment that deemed the old structure unsafe for continued use, it was dismantled in June 2024. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation subsequently undertook the construction of a state-of-the-art cable-stayed bridge to strengthen connectivity between Nagpada and Tardeo. Designed to handle present-day traffic demands, the new flyover is expected to significantly ease congestion in the surrounding areas and provide a safer, more efficient route for daily commuters travelling through this key stretch of south Mumbai.
