The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed a state-of-the-art ventilation system in the subway near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to improve air circulation and ensure comfort for commuters. The new system is designed to maintain fresh airflow and reduce the temperature within the underground area, particularly during peak hours when the space is crowded.

As part of this upgrade, 9 jet fans have been installed throughout the passage to ensure that fresh air circulates quickly at the entrance. Additionally, 2 high-capacity central fans will work to expel hot air, maintaining a comfortable environment for travelers. The system follows the design principles of ventilation used in tunnels, ensuring optimal airflow throughout the underground path.

Incorporating safety features, the system is also equipped to deal with emergencies. In the event of a fire or smoke, the central fans will automatically operate at double speed, helping to clear the smoke and enhance visibility for people in the area.

This improvement is part of the BMC’s ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure around CSMT, enhancing the experience for passengers, pedestrians, and tourists. According to BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, the new system will significantly reduce discomfort and improve air quality in the underground spaces, making travel through the area more pleasant and safe.
